With a great contemporary rock score by Paul Scott Goodman, based on the acclaimed novel by Jay McInerney, Bright Lights, Big City is a rollercoaster ride through the brightly lit streets of Manhattan.
Jamie is a young guy with ambitions. He comes to New York City to fulfill his dream of being a writer but he soon finds himself stuck in a mundane fact checking job for a major magazine under the watchful eye of boss Clara. Married for only a few months, his beautiful wife, Amanda, a model, leaves him to follow her dream in Paris. Jamie loses himself in the bright lights of the 1980s yuppie party scene of New York where his friend Tad brings Jamie into a world of all-night partying at the Odeon club. Jamie indulges but eventually finds himself spinning out of control. He loses touch with his brother, Michael, who is left confused and alone since the death of their mother. Drugs and partying get the better of Jamie, when he commutes to work, a fantasy reporter dives into Jamie’s brain with news headlines that come to life, Jamie spirals out of control as the hallucinations take over along with flashbacks to his relationship with his mother. His friends try to save him but Jamie loses his job. Finally he begins to realise Amanda and wild parties are not what he wants. He meets Vicky who helps turns his life around and finally restarts the novel he once gave up on.
