When you are as long established, well-known and highly regarded as Italia Conti Academy, with alumni that includes some of the most successful actors, singers and musical theatre performers in the business and a world-class reputation for Performing Arts training, you might think that an institution would be tempted to rest on its laurels - not so Italia Conti.
Over the last six months Italia Conti Academy has been buzzing with industry success stories.
Recent alumni John McCrea and Lucy Shorthouse won the What’s On Stage Awards for Best Actor in a Musical and Best Supporting Actress in a Musical, for their sensational performances in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and McCrea has now, also been nominated for an Olivier Award.
Alumna Lesley Manville was nominated for an Oscar for The Phantom Thread and has now been nominated for an Olivier Award for Eugene O’Neil’s A Long Day’s Journey into Night.
One of Italia Conti’s graduating actors, Cameron Percival, was overall winner of this year’s prestigious Carlton Hobbs Radio Award and two more, Alexandra Meyrick and Kate Donnachie were named as runners up.
Alexandra Meyrick and Hannah Morrison were highly commended in the Sam Wannamaker Festival at The Globe, in a scene from Henry V, for a performance described by Spotlight as ‘brilliant’.
Last month, Italia Conti students were invited to launch The Other Palace’s new initiative The Other Masterclass, in which three students were mentored by and performed to great acclaim with West End and Broadway star Rachel Tucker.
And, to cap it all, in September, Italia Conti launches its brand new BA (Hons) in Musical Theatre, which will run alongside its existing Diploma Course.
All in all, a massively successful and exciting few months that shows that far from resting on its laurels, Italia Conti is riding high and going from strength to strength!
